Review of 2022

This year has been different in so many ways at Hollybrooke. For the first time in more than twenty years we have not had visiting mares to our stallions. John was unwell over the winter and we have increased the size of our herd of cows which not only demands more of our time but more of our grass as well, so space for the ponies is more limited. Also as a consequence we have done less showing.
We bred six foals and we are delighted with all of them except that we had five colts and just one filly! However, the one filly is out of our many times champion mare Hollybrooke Melitta. If we had to choose one mare to have a filly it would have been her. She is a very smart foal and we hope she will follow in her mother's footsteps.

We went to very few shows with just three different ponies but we still had some amazing successes. Hollybrooke Melitta won her class at the Breed Show. She has been to that show seven times as an adult and has never been beaten in her class. Hollybrooke Jupiter went to five shows and was only beaten once. At the Breed Show he was not only champion colt but also reserve champion stallion.

While we were having a quiet season other ponies we bred were out and about having lots of success. Hollybrooke Duke has again had a wonderful summer. He had his first proper season in workers with considerable success. On the flat he won the HOYS La Liga Consistency Award for the New Forest pony who achieved the best results in the HOYS qualifiers in 2022. We are so proud of this lovely pony. We have a smart yearling full sister to carry on the line.

Another pony who has had an amazing win is Hollybrooke Calvados. He won the Intro Championship at the British Dressage Quest Finals. What a brilliant achievement for the pony and his young rider. Interestingly we really struggled to sell this pony as a three year old because everyone said he was not big enough. It just goes to show that a Forest pony does not need to be 148cm to do really well.

Lots of Hollybrooke young ponies are starting their careers with new owners. Hollybrooke Treasure now five, has been gaining experience at a variety of clinics and dressage competitions. The three year old filly Hollybrooke Nespresso is learning lots of interesting lessons with her new family. Some of this year's foals have left us for their new homes.

We are starting to cut down on our breeding as many of our mares are coming to the end of their breeding careers, being in their late teens or early twenties (and we are not getting any younger either!). We have just three mares to foal next spring Hollybrooke Debbie now twenty is expecting what will be her last foal, a full brother or sister to Hollybrooke Duke. Hollybrooke Grace and Hollybrooke Ruby are both in foal to Skywalker.
