Review of 2010

The Hollybrooke Stud has had yet another amazing year!

Our two four year old stallions Rambler and Tinker were broken in the early spring and took the whole experience in their stride. They hacked out happily on their own and in company, crossing bridges, water and a multitude of other hazards that we met on the Forest with hardly a second glance. They also enjoyed some loose jumping and both showed scope and ability over a fence. Once the stud season started we turned them away to continue their ridden careers in the autumn. Their first foals were eagerly awaited and they didn’t disappoint! We were delighted with all the foals, but we had two very special colt foals one by each stallion. We were very tempted to keep them, but in the end we decided that we probably had enough colts and we sold them to a super home where they will be given the best opportunity to grow and compete. Both stallions will be represented by the two fillies that we kept and hope to show next year.

We welcomed many visitors to the stud during the year. In July forty five Dutch Breeders spent an afternoon with us. They watched a selection of ponies including the stallions performing in hand and loose. John and senior Dutch judge Henk Schoone discussed the ponies conformation, type and movement and the differences between the Dutch and English New Forest ponies. They followed this by visiting the mares and foals and young stock in the fields. They were particularly impressed by their temperaments and we were overwhelmed by their enthusiasm and praise for our ponies.

At the end of their visit he Dutch visitors presented us with a commemorative rug bearing the Dutch New Forest Breed Society logo.

The show season has been every bit as outstanding as last year. The ponies have won a huge number of rosettes and trophies mainly at Elite shows. Burley Time Lord who had often missed showing opportunities as a yearling and a two year old because of our two older colts, really came to the fore. He started the season by winning an M & M championship and an NPS Silver medal and followed it with 5 firsts, 2 seconds and three reserve championships including becoming reserve Breed champion at the New Forest Show. The yearling Hollybrooke Melitta by Burley Branston also had an excellent season her wins included first at the New Forest Show and second at the Breed Show. The three year old filly Hollybrooke Ruby was young stock champion and reserve overall champion on the first occasion she was shown since a yearling and she followed this with a second at the New Forest Show. Hollybrooke Ginger continued where he left off last year. After at an extremely successful season, at the Breed show he won the two year old gelding class, the gelding young stock championship (for the second successive year) and then stood reserve in hand gelding champion. We just wish that our Granddaughter was old enough to ride him as not only is he a superb model of a forest pony but he has a perfect kind, unflappable temperament to go with it

The stud’s superstar was again Hollybrooke Rambler. We did not imagine that he could repeat last year’s impressive successes. as we were well aware that competing against the mature stallions would be a hard task but we were completely wrong. Our first ever visit to the NPS Summer Championship Show proved very successful, both Time Lord and Rambler won their classes Rambler then took the Breed, limited breeds M & M and the supreme M & M Championships. The first M & M supreme win at that show by a forest pony in twenty years. Even with this fantastic win under his belt, we didn’t dream that a second supreme win at the Breed Show would be possible but how wrong we were. We were more than satisfied when he won the stallion class, but the thrill we felt to win the Owner Breeder and Supreme Championships for the second time is difficult to put into words. He is the youngest pony since the Dolly Gray Supreme Championship Cup was first presented in 1969 to win the supreme and although others have won it twice they were all at least six years old before starting their winning run, Rambler is just four.

We have obviously been overwhelmed by our ponies’ show ring achievements but we have gained enormous pleasure from the success and fun that our oldest stud bred ponies are now giving their new owners under saddle. We set out to breed ponies that would be trainable and perform and they are starting to do just that!
