2008 has been another successful year for the Hollybrooke Stud.
Our stud mares were expecting foals from February onwards. We were really looking forward to our first new arrival, as we thought it was the last foal by our much missed stallion Burley Traveller. The chestnut filly arrived in late February but despite our best efforts only survived a few days. However, the disappointment was soon eased by the unexpected arrival of a large liver chestnut colt. He was out of the homebred mare Hollybrooke Marmite, who although covered by Traveller was thought not to be in foal. Foals by Burley Branston and Wayland Cranberry soon followed. |

Both our two year old colts Hollybrooke Tinker and Hollybrooke Rambler were presented for their Breed Society Stallion inspection and vetting in the spring. They both passed with flying colours. We decided not to cover mares with them this year, but to concentrate on their show careers. We were richly rewarded with both colts winning championships and Tinker also winning an NPS Silver Medal. This left us limited time to show fillies, but Hollybrooke Sparkle was 3rd in the small yeld mare class both at the New Forest and Breed Shows, quite an achievement for a 4 year old, against older and more mature mares. Our yearling colt Burley Time Lord (by Burley Traveller) took much of the summer to fill his large frame but by the end of August he looked a picture. Although lacking ring experience he was 3rd in a very strong yearling colt class at the Breed Show and followed this by coming 2nd and reserve young stock champion at Romsey Show in September. We then took him to the NPS foal and yearling Show where he won his yearling class, the Wessex Subscriber Yearling Championship and finally the Supreme Yearling Championship. He promises much for next year. |

Burley Branston had a well deserved rest from his ridden activities while he was busy covering the stud’s and visiting mares. He did however have to put on his skirt twice, to take part in displays of the NFPEC Quadrille square dance routine. Firstly at the Royal Winsor Horse Show and then at the New Forest Show in July. He is now back in full time work and during the autumn has been participating in the New Forest roundups, an activity that he loves. He is very skilled and quick at driving the ponies, so much so that his rider sometimes needs the odd spot of super glue! He is performing the Quadrille twice more in November and December and has already qualified for the NPS dressage championships at Addington next spring. |

We have now sold most of our 2008 foals except those that are to be retained by the stud. One of the foals we sold Hollybrooke Huckleberry has already started his show career by coming third in a large New Forest foal class at the NPS foal and yearling show. We have two 3 year olds (both by Burley Branston) that will be broken over the winter and will then be for sale. We have retained the well related fillies Hollybrooke Dazzle and Hollybrooke Cappuccino to eventually join our brood mare band and the colts Hollybrooke Ginger and Hollybrooke Maxwell to show next year. We already have mares booked to our stallions Burley Branston, Hollybrooke Tinker and Hollybrooke Rambler for 2009. Burley Time Lord will be presented for his Breed Society Stallion passing and vetting in the spring. We have mares in foal to Peveril Peterborough, Vernons Toy Boy and Burley Branston so some exciting prospects for 2009. |
